Academic writing

Written text is the most common way to communicate research and scientific findings. Therefore, academic writing is an important part of every education at university level. At first, this form of writing may feel like learning a new language, so it is important that you write continuously throughout your studies, in order to gradually improve your skills. Writing also contributes to enhancing your learning process.

While there are general requirements for academic texts – such as accurate reference management – specific subject areas or disciplines may have additional criteria that you need to take into account.

For further guidance and information on academic writing, you can use the following resources:

Book a writing tutorial

Do you need help getting started with a written assignment, finding your academic style, or pulling a text together? Book a 45-minute tutorial with a language consultant from the Academic Support Centre. You can get advice on written work of all sorts. If you are writing as a group, you can all attend the same tutorial.

The writing tutorials exist to equip you to work on your texts independently and so become a better writer. Copy-editing and proofreading is not on offer. Allow enough time to revise your text after the tutorial; it is worth booking early in the writing process.
